She photographed the city from makeshift rafts, recording one of the largest natural disasters in American history which claimed close to 400 lives and left roughly one million people homeless across five states in the winter of that terrible year. Margaret Bourke-White photographed the construction of the Fort Peck Dam. Her work on this project was featured 82 years ago this week (November 23, 1936) in the first issue of Life magazine. Her work was also the cover of the issue. In the mid-1930’s her Life assignments chronicled lives of victims of drought in the Dust Bowl.
